Canada guides
Canada already has what India gets in May 2027: under PIPEDA you can demand to see everything a company holds about you, and they must answer within 30 days. Start with Equifax — the bureau most likely to hold a file on you — then clean up the directory listings.
Equifax — PIPEDA access-request letter
Print this letter, sign it, and mail it with photocopies (front and back) of two pieces of government-issued ID. If your current address isn't on either ID, also enclose a utility bill or bank statement.
Mail to: Chief Privacy Officer, Equifax Canada Co., 5700 Yonge St., Suite 1600, Toronto, ON M2M 4K2.
This letter stays on your paper, in your hands. We never see it — fill in the [BRACKETS] yourself and print it.
[YOUR FULL LEGAL NAME] [YOUR STREET ADDRESS] [CITY, PROVINCE POSTAL CODE] [YOUR PHONE NUMBER] [DATE] Chief Privacy Officer Equifax Canada Co. 5700 Yonge St., Suite 1600 Toronto, ON M2M 4K2 Re: Request for access to personal information under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) Dear Chief Privacy Officer, I am writing to request access to all personal information about me that is under the control of Equifax Canada Co., pursuant to my right of access under PIPEDA. Please provide: 1. A complete copy of all personal information you hold about me, including my consumer credit file and any other personal data held in marketing, analytics, fraud-prevention, or other databases. 2. The sources from which each category of information was collected (e.g., which lenders, data providers, or public records). 3. The names of all third parties to whom my personal information has been disclosed, and the purposes of those disclosures. For identity verification, I have enclosed photocopies (front and back) of two pieces of government-issued identification. My details are: - Full legal name: [YOUR FULL LEGAL NAME] - Date of birth: [YYYY-MM-DD] - Current address: [YOUR FULL ADDRESS] - SIN (optional, to help match my file): [XXX-XXX-XXX] I understand PIPEDA requires a response within 30 days of receipt. If any part of this request cannot be fulfilled, please explain the reasons in writing. Sincerely, ______________________________ [YOUR SIGNATURE] [YOUR PRINTED NAME]
What to expect
Equifax must respond within 30 days under PIPEDA. If they refuse or stall, complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca). This request is broader than a credit report — it covers all personal data they hold, which is the point: the "what do they have on me" question.
The quick win — free credit report (do this too)
Your free consumer file disclosure is separate and faster — no letter needed:
- Online: equifax.ca → "Get my free credit report" → create a myEquifax account → download the PDF.
- Phone: 1-800-465-7166 — after language selection, say "disclosure" or press 1 (automated, 24 hours).
- Mail: National Consumer Relations, Box 190, Montreal, QC H1S 2Z2, with the same two pieces of ID.
Review the disclosure for accounts, addresses, and employers you don't recognise — those are the entries to dispute or opt out of next.
Canada411 — remove your directory listing
Canada411 (Yellow Pages) lists residential numbers from published telephone records. Two routes:
Website-only removal (keeps print directory + Directory Assistance)
- Go to the Canada411 help page and find "How do I remove my listing?"
- Under option 2, click the linked removal form and submit it. (The form is linked from that FAQ answer — we link the FAQ page, not a guessed form URL.)
- Your listing is removed from Canada411.ca within two working days.
Full removal (site + print directory + Directory Assistance)
- Contact your local telephone provider and ask for your number to be changed to unlisted. Monthly fees may apply.
- Optionally ask the provider to email Canada411 directly to speed it up — only requests from recognised telephone providers are processed, and removal then takes two working days; otherwise the change appears on the site within one to two months.
- Note: Canada411 states it will not remove a listing on a direct consumer request under this route — it only acts on the provider's request.
Honest caveat: listings come from published telephone records; unlisted numbers and cell numbers are not displayed. Removing the Canada411 listing does not remove the underlying published phone record — the provider-level unlisting is the durable fix. Data is 30–65 days old and refreshed monthly, so a just-unlisted number can linger briefly.

Yellow Pages / 411.ca — deletion request by email
Yellow Pages Digital & Media Solutions (which owns 411.ca and Canada411.ca) publishes a deletion and de-indexation route in its Privacy Statement:
- Email a deletion or de-indexation request to privacy@yp.ca — the statement's own words: "Should you wish to reach out to us with a deletion or de-indexation request, please contact us at privacy@yp.ca". Include the listing URL and identifying details.
- For written concerns, the Privacy Officer is Philip Samman, Director, Legal Affairs, Yellow Pages Digital & Media Solutions Limited, 1751 Richardson St., Suite 8.300, Montreal, QC H3K 1G6, privacy@yp.ca.
No self-serve removal form was found on YP properties — email is the only published route. YP states it retains personal data only as long as reasonably necessary and then securely erases or de-indexes it. For residential directory listings specifically, use the Canada411 route above; the privacy@yp.ca route covers YP's own holdings and de-indexation.

No timeline is stated in the statement.
Whitepages — diaspora extra US company
Whitepages is a US people-search site, not Canadian — but it commonly holds listings for people in the diaspora, so it is included here and labelled clearly as such.
- Search whitepages.com for your profile and copy its URL.
- Paste it into the suppression form at whitepages.com/suppression-requests.
- Confirm the record is yours and click "Remove Me".
- Complete verification. The automated route asks for a phone number; a form/email route at privacyrequest@whitepages.com exists for those who prefer not to share one.
CCPA opt-outs: up to 15 days to process, often faster.
