Truecaller
Truecaller is a caller-ID app. It builds its directory largely from users' contact lists — your number can be listed even if you never installed the app. India is its largest market, with 350 million+ monthly users there. Unlisting is free and needs no account.
The law, plainly: until 13 May 2027, India's DPDP erasure right is not enforceable. This request asks Truecaller to act voluntarily. In practice Truecaller honours unlisting quickly — but it is an ask, not an enforceable right, until May 2027.
Exact steps
- If you have a Truecaller account, deactivate it first. Open the app → Settings → Privacy Center → Deactivate. Deactivation alone does not remove your number from search — step 2 is still required.
- Go to truecaller.com/unlisting — the official unlisting page, free, no account needed.
- Select your country code manually (+91 for India, +1 for Canada/US), enter the number without leading zeros, complete the CAPTCHA, and click Unlist Phone Number. Confirm. A reason may be asked — pick "privacy concerns". An OTP to the number is sometimes required.
- Allow up to 24 hours for global propagation. Re-check after 2 days and resubmit if you are still listed.
What to expect
Unlisting usually takes effect within 24–48 hours. Truecaller's own support pages state it "may take up to 24 hours".
Re-listing warning: your number can reappear if someone who has you in their contacts re-uploads their address book to Truecaller. If you are listed again later, re-run the same unlisting step — and ask close contacts not to sync their address books to caller-ID apps.
If it fails, do this instead
- Re-check after 2 days and resubmit the form — propagation is sometimes slow.
- Contact Truecaller support at support@truecaller.com (non-EU support address, published on their site).
- Re-check again about 30 days after removal. Broker data reappears — a monthly re-check is part of the routine.
